Billy's Delicatessen — 818-246-1689
Deli/bakery — www.billysdeli.com
216 N Orange St
Glendale, CA 91203

The City of Glendale will be celebrating its Century of growth. Billy’s Glendale has been a part of that history for over a half century.

Billy’s Delicatessen has been a Glendale landmark since 1948. The signature storefront is still a local attraction. The “Wall” is made of ceramic, hand sculpted blocks of cheese, bread loaves, sticks of salami and wine casks.

To insure freshness, the full service delicatessen baked it’s own breads. The bakery expanded into pastries, pies, cookies (do we even have to mention the Brownies?) and cakes. The “deli slash bakery” added a full sit-down restaurant. That wasn’t enough. So catering became a big part of Billy’s. Now the company is really full service: Delicatessen, Restaurant, Bakery, and Catering.

My biggest surprise will be the introduction of special menus two days each month that will replace the regular menu on those days.  I invite you to follow me on Facebook - or you can sign up elsewhere on this web site to receive email updates - to see when each month I will be preparing these amazing menus.

It is an exciting time here at Bistro LQ, and I am thrilled that you are planning to share these great times with us!  I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for your support and enthusiasm.

Dan Tana’s – 310.275.9444
Culinary Delights — www.dantanasrestaurant.com
9071 Santa Monica Blvd. West Hollywood, CA 90069

OLD SCHOOL HOLLYWOOD FARE DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER

When someone recently asked where I wanted to go to celebrate a milestone birthday, my answer, without any hesitation, was Dan Tana’s, hands down the best old school joint in town.

Sure you can make an argument for Musso & Frank, since it’s the oldest restaurant in Hollywood, but personally, I don’t think anyone does it better than Dan Tana’s who celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2004. A tiny restaurant next to the Troubadour, its 20 tables are always packed, often with notable entertainers and Hollywood power players (Phil Spector dined there right before he allegedly shot actress Lana Clarkson). The red-walled Italian favorite is adorned with Jerry West and Vlade Divac Lakers jerseys, and features waiters dressed in tuxedos. Most of the delicious menu items are all named after celebrities who frequent the place, most recently George Clooney who has the Veal Cutlet Milanese named after him. (Review continued)

Everything from the marble tabletops to the crystal chandeliers to the dominating bust of Michelangelo’s David standing sentry over the open kitchen inspires visions of authentic Italy, and the resulting ambiance is truly special.

Gale’s is all about great food, and what sends the eclectic collection of northern Italian offerings sailing into the culinary stratosphere actually seems simple to the owner.

“The one area where we are totally committed and where we never compromise is using really great ingredients that are as fresh as possible,” says Gale. “We buy some of our produce from the farmers’ market and try to pick up organic produce whenever it’s appropriate. Melody Bar & Grill — 310.670.1994
American — www.melodylax.com

Los Angeles, CA 90045

A DINING GEM READY FOR TAKEOFF

A true gem tucked in the heart of Westchester (where?), that’s by the airport in case you don’t know, the Melody Bar & Grill may not look like much from the exterior but that just makes this truly cool haunt an even cooler secret to know about.

From the outside, in front of busy Sepulveda Blvd. in Westchester, right by the airport, Melody Bar & Grill looks like a sports bar dive (and I say that fondly). Even the art deco neon sign doesn’t completely light up. Inside it looks like a barfly haunt with its Bordello red walls and giant gaming room with pool table, dart boards and cigarette machine.

But, then you notice the impressive fireplace and the elegant dining room. Sure, they pour stiff drinks, as any good bar should, but sit down and gander at their savory menu and you’ve just landed at your destination: culinary heaven. (Review continued)
