PETITE TAQUERIA
BOTTOMLESS BRUNCH
Ever since Petite Taqueria opened, it became an immediate hot spot for the posh crowd to dine on Mexican comfort food. The setting is chic and it is located next door to trendy nightclub Poppy, so it was an instant part of the L.A. nightlife scene.
I quickly reviewed dinner at Petite Taqueria and was a fan of its longstanding Mezcal Mondays. And I found its “secret” Mexican omakase bar Ainoko to be one of my favorite dining destinations in L.A. where Chef John-Carlos Kuramoto really shined blending cultures and cuisine to create flavorful and flamboyant dishes.
But where Petite Taqueria itself really shines is with its bold and bottomless brunch. Weekend brunch is served every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3pm, offering Mexican coffee and bottomless mimosas to go along with brunch staples like chilaquiles, breakfast tamales, and Mexican crepes.
The weekend brunch setting includes indoor seating in a dark, almost club-like interior or sunny outdoor seating for those not hurting from the night before. Either way you’ll want to start with a drink. Bottomless mimosas (classic or seasonal) costs $21. And I think boozy Mexican brunch requires at least one Michelada or Bloody Maria (with tequila as opposed to vodka as in a Bloody Mary) but I say the way to go is with the outrageous Oyster Borracho. Picture this, an oyster with green mignonette on Estrella Jalisco beer, with chili lime salt, hot sauce and clilantro. It’s oversized and you probably won’t finish it but at $9 it’s cheaper than the Bloody Maria or Michelada and your Instagram followers will be impressed.
Personally, and I am a big fan of day drinking, I think going with the Paloma made with Herradura reposado tequila, Pamplemousse, Campari, lime, grapefruit, and Jarritos grapefruit soda is the way to go. They just go down so easy. If you really want to step up your boozy brunch game, then go with the Smokin’ Greens made with Del Maguey Vida mezcal, Ancho Reyes, orange, lime, agave, and cilantro.
Brunch options are plentiful. You can’t go wrong with the Chilaquiles. And the Eggs Benny with masa pupusa, black beans, jamón, poached eggs and hollandaise is really nice. The Mexican Pizza with beef picadillo, refried beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, escabeche, sour cream, and cotija is great to share.
An elevated brunch option is the Grit in My Belly with agave-glazed pork belly, collard greens, white cheddar cheese and a poached egg. Damn that was good. If you’re looking for something a little healthy, the Roasted Beet Salad is a good choice. On the sweeter side, the Corn Pancakes with candied corn, mascarpone, and agave piloncillo butter is solid, as is the Mexican Crepe with canela, coffee whipped cream, and Nutella.
If you’re looking for liquid dessert, the Early Bird with Selvarey Cacao Rum, 1921 crema de tequila, coffee, pineapple, agave, and Aztec chocolate bitters will not disappoint.
I’d rank Petite Taqueria’s weekend brunch among the best in town. It offers bottomless options alongside great Mexican daytime fare and solid cocktails to make for one blistering boozy brunch. Now that’s what a weekend is all about.
