NIGHTHAWK BREAKFAST BAR
BOOZY BREAKFAST COMES TO HOLLYWOOD

There’s something really cool about eating breakfast any time of the day or night. It’s familiar comfort food that reminds us of home no matter where we are. So props to nightlife impresario Jeremy Fall for coming up with Nighthawk Breakfast Bar, a hip late night breakfast joint that has set up shop at Sadie Kitchen & Lounge in Hollywood.

In his continuing quest to redefine Hollywood’s nightlife landscape, Jeremy Fall has teamed up with longtime Spago alum and Sadie Executive Chef Greg Schroeppel to develop a night breakfast menu of egg-centric dishes that pair perfectly with his curated cocktail list that he and Sadie Beverage Director Giovani Martinez have developed. The cocktail list features spiked cereal milk served in milk bottles; boozed up orange Julius; and a modern take on an Irish Coffee.

"This is a detailed curation project for a concept I created a long time ago that I wanted to install and see grow,” Fall explains. “Breakfast is such an iconic staple in American culture and hospitality—it’s a social activity where people actually congregate authentically and have conversations that aren't forced by the societal pressures of going out at night. I wanted to take those comforting and familiar elements and rewrite them into nightlife."

During our recent visit, a healthy line of was breakfast eaters was already formed outside waiting for doors to open. Once inside (reservations are highly recommended FYI), you’re greeted with a complimentary cup of coffee and newspaper at your table while you peruse the menu of scrambles and melts.

And what’s a late night breakfast without a cocktail? The spiked cereal milk just seemed like the way to start. I really have to hand it to Giovanni Martinez for coming up with a very clever and very delicious boozy breakfast beverages. His Honey Nut Bourbon spiked milk drink—think Honey Nut Cheerios milk and bourbon—was just so damn tasty. There’s also a fruity (pebbles) cereal milk combo with gin that’s quite nice. A third option is cocoa milk and brandy blend. They have proven to be very popular and when they sell out for the night, they are gone.

If you’re lactose intolerant and you still want to get your breakfast buzz on, go for the boozy floats, which include Absinthe on Abita Root Beer—very nice—or Fernet Mint and Chip on Mexican Coca Cola. There’s also Julius cocktails like The OG (orange juice, gin, milk, ice, vanilla) and The Tropical One (orange juice, pineapple rum and milk). Mad props to Gio for really thinking outside the box with his drink menu.

Breakfast options include Drunken French Toast with crispy challah with pear brandy, red pear compote, mascarpone mousse, and maple syrup. This is a great dish to share.

But the killer breakfast options are the Chicken & Biscuits with cheddar biscuits, buttermilk fried chicken and sausage gravy. Damn! That’s all you can about this decadent dish.

The “Benedict” Fries are a must-have. Hopefully you’re sharing these bad boys otherwise I hope you’re just treating yourself because this is a definite diet breaker. Hand cut fries, smoked ham, peppadew peppers, Raclette cheese, smoked paprika hollandaise, and a fried egg make up this wonderfully over indulgent gem. This may be a stretch as far as “breakfast” goes but it’s so good. Talk about the ultimate late night buzz food.

And not to be outdone, the Tower O’Bacon is amazing. It’s thick sliced “Tapatio” candied bacon that is just out of this world. These are some of the best strips of bacon I’ve ever had—albeit candied.

The Chorizo & Egg Street Tacos with roasted Poblano chiles, avocado, pickled shallot, crème fraiche and arbol salsa are damn good and not so deadly if you’re concerned about eating out so late.

If you’re really hungry and craving a hearty late night bite, the Breakfast Banh Mi with grilled pork belly, pickled daikon and carrot, cilantro, jalapeño, sriracha mayo, fried egg on a brioche bun is a winner. Likewise, the Nighthawk Sausage Sandwich with house made pork sausage, scrambled egg, gruyere cheese, arugula, three peppercorn aioli on a pretzel bun is a solid choice.

I’ve always been a big fan of Sadie and Giovanni Martinez cocktails, so Nighthawk is another good reason to visit this cool Hollywood spot. Good late night eats, paired with cool cocktail concoctions, what else do you need? Good times are destined to follow. They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, well, now you can enjoy it late night in a fun setting with boozy breakfast beverages.

Nighthawk Breakfast Bar, located at Sadie Kitchen & Lounge at 1638 N Las Palmas, is open Wednesday through Saturday nights from 8pm to 2am.
