KARA WILY PILATES:
Mind and Body Workout at Larchmont Village

By Jose Martinez

Tucked neatly in the heart of Larchmont Village, Pilates instructor Kara Wily encourages, challenges and, when needed, pushes her clients to get the most out their body at her Kara Wily Pilates studio.

A Pilates advocate for 22 years, she proudly notes that’s half her life, the former dancer who took to Pilates after a skiing accident has been certified since 1996.

“I think Pilates is the most strenuous exercise that I’ve ever done, other than a Russian ballet class,” Wily notes.

Offering one-on-one sessions, semi-private, and group classes of 5, your first class will be spent trying each apparatus as the instructor gets to know you and your body. By your second session, get ready to sweat!

Versatile with all Pilates equipment, including Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda chair, Ladder Barrel, and mat, Wily likes to change things up and never let a session be ‘business as usual.’

“Pilates has something for everyone,” she explains. “It can be used to come back from an injury or used as a great cross training tool for people who do competitive sports and are constantly using one set of muscle groups and not using others, or it can be used for the everyday lay or business person who has a very work-heavy workload and doesn’t get enough activity. This really does encourage you to use every part of your body.”

Believing in the notion of “Lay down and workout,” Wily’s instruction is nonabrasive, friendly and encouraging. Trained in New York City, Wily uses only Gratz equipment, the manufacturer that Joseph Pilates took his design to equipment.

“It’s the closest you get to the way it was originally created which is important to me. I come from a background of dance, so there’s technique and there’s choreography, and no matter what a brilliant choreographer you might be, if you don’t have a really good foundation in your technique you’re going to end up having problems with your body. Choreography is for performance, it looks nice, it’s beautiful, but technique is where you get your strength, your mobility, your understanding of the body and that to me is what differentiates the way I’ve always taught Pilates.”

Creating a relaxing environment, from working out to the music of Jane’s Addiction if that’s what you like, Wily even painstakingly considers the art that decorates her walls as means of inspiration. On March 19 she’ll be debuting a three-month exhibit from French artist David LeClerc to inspire clients.

With her fundamental principle being that the human body possesses great potential, Wily is determined to get the best out of you at all times.
