A VIKING ATTITUDE ABOUT BEER

Longship Brewery is, like its Viking namesake, exploring. In this version it is an exploration of the sea of taste that lands on some unique flavors. This exploration of taste is what excites head brewer Charles Nation “This is the first time I have been able to experiment with Commercial equipment “after years of being a home brewer Charles found himself introduced to the owner of  Longship Brewery, Dan Jachimowicz. The two hit it off right away and are excited about bringing tasteful edgy recipes to the public. “It’s the best job!” exclaimed Charles who also made his chops working at smaller microbreweries. “The equipment used at some other microbreweries can be a bit of a hodgepodge” he said.

Speaking of equipment, I had noticed on the event calendar something called Infusion Saturday. I asked Charles what is done when infusing beer. He brought out their Randall a 2-chamber device that will infuse the flavor of what is in the first chamber. The second chamber allows the beer to mix with whatever is being infused and is connected to a tap so you can pour the imbued mixture. Cool stuff I thought, now I need to taste some brew!

The Flight I had was a sampling of both light and heavier brews. The 4 glasses off the menu were, sunstone pilsner using Czech style pilts, Asgard Ale a Belgian IPA, Eric the Red Eye a red ale infused with Seven Seas Roasting Company coffee, and Ragnabock a doppelbock strong dark lager, winner of the 2017 silver medal at New York’s International Beer competition. I had no complaints and confirmed my like of Lagers and Ale but hey the others were not slouching on flavor!  I am not a brewer and knew not what doppelbock or other terms meant when I heard them. So, I hope you have fun learning about them like I am doing.
