A popular go-to destination for beer lovers, Gordon Biersch has been serving diners and drinkers for over 30 years. Known for combining German precision brewing with American craft beer, each restaurant (there are seven throughout the USA) has an on onsite brewery where local brew-masters brew to the highest German standards and use pure ingredients to create clean, fresh German lagers and fine American craft beer.

Recently, the brewery and restaurant chain debuted a new menu showcasing a mix of eclectic American dishes and select German favorites that pair very well with its lineup of beers.  New menu items include Stacked Ribs with Märzen BBQ Sauce, Chicken Schnitzel Sliders, Wagyu Meatballs, Fire-Grilled Artichokes, Twisted Tenders, Tuna Poke Rice Bowl, Philly Cheesesteak, Crispy Chicken Schnitzel, Korean Chicken Pizza and more.

During our recent visit to the Burbank location, we started with a couple of beers to kick things off. Starter items we feasted on included Chicken Schnitzel Sliders with crunchy crust, lemon caper aioli, and pickles, followed by Deviled Eggs with bacon, smoked paprika, sea salt, and pickled fresno, and Wagyu Meatballs—a combination of pork and wagyu, miso cream, gochujang, sprouts, cilantro, and toasted cashews. A highly recommended appetizer is the Burrata & Roasted Tomatoes impressively prepared with shaved parmesan, basil, balsamic reduction, and sea salt served with grilled toast.

Good sharable options to pair with a cold brew are the Korean Chicken Pizza served with soy grilled chicken, scallion, gochujang sauce, sprouts, and cashews, as well as the Philly Cheesesteak with shaved sirloin, American and pepper jack cheese, grilled onions and peppers, aioli and your choice of side item. It’s hearty and is a solid pub food option. Other menu pizzas include Grilled Wagyu, Meat Lovers with pepperoni, bacon, andouille sausage, and grilled chicken, as well as a Caprese pie with fresh mozzarella, Roma tomatoes, fresh basil and herbs, roasted garlic, and balsamic drizzle.

My favorite pairing of the night was the Baby Back Stacked Ribs with Märzen BBQ sauce served with fries and jalapeño coleslaw, which perfectly paired with the Märzen beer that’s also in the BBQ sauce. This duo just got it right.

Beloved for their famous garlic fries, you can indulge on beers and fries and maybe opt for the burrata to keep things nice and simple. While the new menu items are touted as “elevated” by the powers that be, I found them to be mostly fair fare. Maybe stick to the Märzen BBQ bacon burger and pair it with the Märzen beer. Those two should get along famously.
