FARMBOY KITCHEN
HEARTY FARE IN THE HEART OF HOLLYWOOD

Showcasing his Virginia farm roots, Chef Hunter Fox has opened Farmboy Kitchen on the corner of Santa Monica and Vine. Described by Fox as a fresh California deli featuring a menu stocked full of hearty soups, brisket chili, as well as sandwiches of top round beef; fried chicken and kimchi; sausages; and corn beef; everything is sourced from local farmers and made in-house, including the breads and pastries.

Other menu standouts include rotisserie chicken, Farmboy Caesar (to be eaten with your hands); shaved prime rib; and sides of curry cauliflower, blue cheese slaw and grandma’s potato salad to name a few.

A fixture in the LA nightlife scene, Chef Fox grew up on a farm in Virginia before moving to the west coast to work in several restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. His goal was to give his Hollywood neighborhood a place that served farm fresh ingredients in a relaxed and casual atmosphere at an affordable price.

During our recent visit for weekday lunch, we started with a bowl of the hearty Brisket Chili, which really hit the spot. Other solid standouts include the Porchetta Sandwich (damn that was amazing!) along with the Fried Chicken Sandwich with kimchi and roasted garlic lemon aioli—an absolutely delicious chicken sandwich.

The Farmboy Caesar, meant to be eaten with your fingers, was good but I’m a Caesar salad purist (if not snob) so the simplicity of this dish was lost on me. If you’re really hungry and care to eat well and healthy, the rotisserie chicken is a great option. Choose from a quarter-chicken to half-a-chicken with one or two sides. This is a fresh and clean bird. For our sides, I loved the roasted beets with feta as I just love gold beets, and Grandma’s Potato Salad was nice too. Fans of lemonade should know that their lemonade is very zesty.

And do save room for desserts as the treats from pastry chef Janet Greenblatt, formerly of Clifton’s, are out of this world good. Her Chocolate Evil is an overdose of chocolate, and her pistachio cake is delicious. From hearty comfort food to decadent delights, Farmboy Kitchen is a great neighborhood spot offering solid dishes and a good price.

Farmboy Kitchen is located at 1050 Vine Street in Hollywood. Open daily from 11am to 10pm. Call 323-848-4790.
