BARNEY’S BEANERY
AN L.A. LANDMARK FOR 90 YEARS

Locals know that if they want good, quality eats no matter the time of day, they can trust the capable hands of Barney’s Beanery, just as visitors know that it’s an L.A. landmark they must eat and drink at.

Barney's original SoCal location was a favorite among stars such as Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Judy Garland and Rita Hayworth. By the ‘60s, a new crop of stars were regulars, in fact, The Doors’ Jim Morrison was reportedly thrown out of Barney's for urinating on the bar, and Janis Joplin had drinks at Barney's the night she died.

Founded by John "Barney" Anthony in Berkeley, local Barney’s locations now include West Hollywood, Burbank, Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Westwood. While the smaller yet chaotic WeHo Barney’s remains an institution for being the first in the area and for its proximity to the Sunset Strip, the Westwood location is a sensory overload juggernaut where TVs galore will make sure every important event will be televised.

But the fact of the matter is, it’s all about the food at Barney’s Beanery no matter the location. Call it comfort food or oversized joy, there’s something for everyone in the extensive Barney’s menu, from Mexican staples and Italian classics to vegetarian options. During our recent visit to the Westwood location, we started with a couple of beers on tap from Barney's behemoth beer menu, which boasts close to 40 beers on draft and 160 bottled brews.

The Appetizers & Snacks section is vast and filled with perfect selections for sharing. We went with the highly recommended Fried Pickles and were not disappointed. Another favorite were the Sautéed Mushrooms.

Looking for something a little more daring, we gave the Hot Wing Sampler a go. Featuring three spicy wings, three sweet and spicy wings, and 3 BBQ wings served with celery, cucumber salad and ranch, this gets the job done if you’re flying solo or gets the party started right if you’re in a group. Another go-to option is the Famous Chili Sampler, which includes a sample of Barney’s Delicious Chili, Classic Texas Turkey, Fireman’s Chili with Tri-Tip black bean chili, and Veggie Chili. If you’re looking to order just one bowl of chili, go for the award-winning Fireman’s.

Time to move onto stiffer drinks and we went with the potent Westwood Tea, and the tequila based Pink Cadillac. These are sweet, strong and satisfying. You’ve been warned.

With plenty of oversized salads and hearty burgers and sandwiches to choose from, we decided to split more out of the ordinary dishes and ordered the Enchiladas, choosing a shrimp, veggie, and Machaca enchilada, as well as “Johnnie’s Favorite” Calzone, made with pepperoni, mushroom, jalapeño, cilantro, mozzarella and homemade pizza sauce. Barney’s calzones were voted the number one specialty pizza in L.A. by KISS-FM Radio for a reason, as they’re huge, filling and ever so tasty. Even sharing one of these bad boys, you will have leftovers.

The perfect place to watch the big PPV fight, Super Bowl, or once in a lifetime must-see event, chances are you will save room for dessert and our pick is the do-it-yourself S’mores. Decadent and delicious, it’s a little more satisfying when you prepare your tasty treats yourself.

A classic California joint, Barney’s Beanery is ideal to hangout, watch the big game, indulge and feast among comfort food staples.

Barney’s Beanery is located in West Hollywood, Burbank, Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Westwood. Click here for more info.
