BARNEY’S BEANERY
ROCKIN’ COMFORT FOOD SINCE 1920

Now, during a time when we’re all looking for a sense of normalcy, it’s comforting to have a good friend like Barney’s Beanery back in business again.

I’ve written about Barney’s Beanery before, lauding it at the time as an L.A. landmark for 90 years. Now it’s celebrating 100 years in business. And as a landmark, Barney’s has been a favorite to a who’s who of celebrities over the years, including former regulars like Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Judy Garland and Rita Hayworth. By the ‘60s, a new crop of rock stars were regulars. In fact, The Doors’ Jim Morrison was reportedly thrown out of Barney's for urinating on the bar, and Janis Joplin had drinks at Barney's the night she died.

Founded by John "Barney" Anthony in Berkeley, local Barney’s locations include West Hollywood, Burbank (temporarily closed), Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Westwood. While we can’t currently hangout and eat and drink at Barney’s Beanery, it is open for business for curbside pickup and delivery.

And that includes 16oz cocktails and beer to go. That’s right, favorites like the Spicy Margarita and Moscow Mule are available to combat quarantine. For $22, the Bloody Mary Kit includes a 16oz bottle of Famous Bloody Mary Mix along with a bottle of House Vodka.

Popular available Appetizers include the Buffalo Chicken Quesadilla, Fish & Chips, Mac & Cheese Wedges, Jalapeño Poppers, as well as Mozzarella Sticks among other hearty options.

And don’t forget Barney’s Famous Chili, it’s also available for pickup. Choose your style and size. Chili options include Vegetable and The “Classic” Since 1920. Add sour cream, cheese, or onions for an additional charge.

Other to-go menu options include burgers, pizza, calzones, sandwiches, club sandwiches, and sides such as Barney’s House Salad, Steak Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, and Seasoned Fries. Unfortunately, the killer Roast Your Own S’mores isn’t an available choice but there is chocolate cake for dessert.

It will be interesting to see how Barney’s Beanery does as a to-go spot until in-room restaurant dining returns to our lives. No one really goes to Barney’s just for the food. It’s a fun place to go to and hangout, eat oversized, diet-busting food, and drink, drink, drink. Maybe even watch a game (or games) on TV. That’s what is so comforting about Barney’s, it reminds us of fun places and fun times more so than a place to go to for excellent cuisine or cocktails.

But I can also see that ordering a slew of appetizers along with a pizza or big burger and cocktails could make for a fun night in—and long for the days when nightlife didn’t include Zoom.
