101 CIDER HOUSE
DTLA CIDER HOUSE OF FUN
I’m not much a beer fan so I didn’t know where that would leave me when it came to cider. But after a recent cider tasting, much to my surprise, I liked what I tasted. Sure, I still prefer a neat spirit or a proper cocktail, but at least the ciders of 101 Cider House left quite an impression on me.
The impression made had such an impact that I even opted to visit the cider house warehouse in Downtown L.A. There I discovered that the 101 Cider House facility and tasting room is just a great place to sit back, chill, relax and enjoy some cool cider.
Cider, or hard cider to point out that we’re talking about boozy cider, is fermented in small batches and aged for four months resulting in a naturally alcoholic, sour and certified probiotic beverage. Indeed, sour cider is a cold pressed juice for adults. In the USA, drinks can be called cider as longs as it’s made with at least 50% apples. The apples chosen to make 101 Cider House are found along the 101 Freeway from Los Angeles County to Sonoma County.
Fun fact about 101 Cider House ciders, founded by Mark McTavish in 2013, they are gluten free, vegan-friendly, and have zero carbs.
“Our ciders contain zero residual sugar and no carbs,” say the powers that be at 101 Cider House. “The byproduct of our natural cidermaking process, we start with 100% fresh pressed juice, chock full of naturally occurring yeasts and bacteria that ferment our base cider. To that, we add fresh fruits and herbs for flavor, and then everything is conditioned in the bottle (or keg). Our naturally occurring microbial friends eat up all of the sugar and carbohydrates, leaving you with a tasty bone-dry cider that contains just 80 calories per 8oz serving. All of our nutritional data is routinely tested and confirmed via industry leaving laboratories.”
At the 101 Cider House, you can visit and chill out and bask in a comfy, stress free space. And of course, you can drink cider.
The cider lineup includes Scrumpy—the original 101 Cider House flagship cider; Black Dog, the world’s first black cider; Cactus Rosé, a southwest-style cider; Electric Pineapple; India Pale Cider; Gunpowder Guava; Bonfire Betty; Sour Perry (pear cider); Mosaic Perry; and Purple Monkey (a sour cider meets a fruity boat drink), among others.
The downtown space is perfect to hangout with friends or rent out for private parties and events. There are even surfboards on the wall creating a beachy, So Cal atmosphere that’s ideal for day drinking.
Get to know and appreciate the 101 Cider House lineup and of course take ciders home with you to keep the good times rolling and make your house a cider house.
